Why do Scandinavian Christians celebrate Yule?

We call the holiday Yule, not Christmas, in Scandinavia. Most Nordic Christians may not partake in all traditions with pagan origin, but they are all invariably saying ''God Jul!'' (Happy Yule!), which clearly is participation in the pagan holiday. Why are they doing this?
